Case Study: Spelling Correctly, Day After Day

iviljoen
Ignus

Ignus had severe spelling problems. He spelled everything phonetically. By the end of Grade 3 his spelling ability was assessed and found to be on a level equivalent to a child between 7.0- 7.3 years of age.

When Ignus entered Grade 4, Mrs. Willies, a remedial teacher, started him on Audiblox. Eleven months later she reported:

“His spelling and visual memory have definitely improved, as well as his concentration and motivation. In the remedial class, he was the student who spelled his words correctly, week after week, and day after day. His teacher, Miss Botha, had also remarked that there is a distinct improvement in his schoolwork.”

By the end of Grade 4 Ignus’s spelling ability was re-assessed and found to be on a level equivalent to a child between 9.0-9.3 years of age.

Below are examples of Ignus’s spelling in English, his second language, at the beginning of Grade 4 and at the end of Grade 4.
