My son Jeremy is currently in the 4th grade. We began to suspect a learning problem in the second grade. He was assigned to a corrective support teacher for reading and math. He made some progress. The third grade was a disaster. It appeared like he had forgotten everything that he had learned the year before. We also discovered that he had strabismus and was seeing double. That problem was fixed after a year of vision therapy.
Because of the tough grade three year grade four got off to a shaky start. He passed grade three by the skin of his teeth. Now that his vision was normal I was hoping with extra practice he would catch up but he had missed so much the year before that he was baffled by new math and reading concepts. His writing displayed dyslexic like symptoms and even though his teacher and a learning disabilities doctor didn’t think it was dyslexia they didn’t have any answers either. Support for him at school is limited because the criteria for more serious intervention is that a student must be two full grades behind. My son was one half to two thirds a year behind. Not enough to fail but enough to make it tough to function effectively at school.
When I looked up dyslexia on the internet I came across the Audiblox website. I ordered the program and after almost three months he has improved in reading fluency and some comprehension although it is still below grade average. He has made it to average grades in math. Writing compositions has improved too. I’m hoping that after a bit more time with the program we will see him attain average grades or better. I’m grateful for this program and the support I have received.
