Lizani Uses Her Skills to Help Children to Learn

POLOKWANE – Lizani Muller’s passion for teaching prompted her to open Edublox Reading and Learning Clinic.

The clinic opened in April. Lizani was a primary school teacher for many years.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher, there was nothing I wanted to do more.” Lizani identified there was a need to help children with learning difficulties.

Wanting to do more to help learners overcome the stigma of learning disabilities, she opened the clinic, providing the full spectrum of Edublox products to help learners with learning problems.

“Many parents are faced with being told their child has a ‘learning problem’. They then don’t have any idea what to do or where to turn to. I have seen tremendous success on a daily basis with learners who follow the programme and are able to overcome their learning problems,” Lizani said.

Edublox’s main objective is to develop and practise the underlying skills in reading, spelling, writing, and learning. Skills include attention and concentration, visual, auditory and haptic perception, the ability to discriminate, synthesise and analyse in terms of foreground and background, form, size, position in space and colour, processing speed, phonemic awareness, short- and long-term memory and the ability to decode, integrate and classify information.

The outcome is improved reading and learning ability, leading to improved academic performance, which will build the learner’s self-image and improve his or her self-confidence.

The clinic offers classes in English and Afrikaans.

“With a reported provincial literacy rate of only 39% at gr. 3 level and language competency at a shocking 15% at gr. 6 level in 2011, it is clear the province will benefit from additional learning programmes such as Edublox,” she said.
